PopulationNaturally aged female mice and isolated oocytes

EndpointsOocyte NAD+; Ovulation; Meiotic competence; Fertilization ability; Spindle and chromosome structure; Mitochondrial function; Reactive oxygen species and apoptosis; Single-cell transcriptome

What the publication reported

This independent mouse study examined whether NMN could alter age-related deterioration in oocyte quality.

NMN restored oocyte NAD+ and was associated with improved ovulation, meiotic competence, fertilization-related measures, spindle and chromosome structure, and mitochondrial function in aged mice.

Although the results complement other reproductive-aging work, they remain animal data and do not establish fertility effects in women.

Key findings

  • NMN increased NAD+ in oocytes from aged mice.
  • Ovulation, meiotic competence and fertilization-related measures improved in the model.
  • Spindle/chromosome and cortical-granule-related abnormalities were reduced.
  • Mitochondrial function improved and oxidative-stress/apoptosis measures declined.

What it cannot establish

  • Mouse and oocyte study only.
  • No human fertility or pregnancy outcomes.
  • Experimental dosing and reproductive timing may not translate to human supplementation.
  • Single-cell and cellular outcomes are mechanistic rather than clinical.
HealthspanX claim boundary: This study does not establish that NMN improves female fertility, egg quality, ovarian reserve, IVF outcomes or pregnancy in humans.
