What Do Human Studies Show About NMN And Weight Loss?

NMN was associated with about 1.1 - 7.28 pounds (0.5 - 3.3 kg) of reduced weight in a clinical trial with 30 overweight adults. However, these results were observed at very high doses of NMN, which went up to 2000 mg. 

However, another trial, which used a smaller dose of 250 mg/day saw no change in body weight. For over 10 weeks, postmenopausal overweight women were given NMN, but they didn’t show a significant change in their weight compared to the control group. This result is just like the mouse trial where NMN did not significantly change body weight. 

A landmark clinical trial published in Science studied postmenopausal women with prediabetes who were overweight or obese. Participants received 250 mg of NMN daily for 10 weeks. And there were some very interesting results:

  • Muscle insulin sensitivity improved

  • Muscle signaling pathways (AKT and mTOR) were more active, showing that muscle cells might be moving towards a more active state.

  • No significant changes in body weight or fat mass were observed over the short study period.

This means NMN did not cause quick weight loss, but it changed the metabolic environment inside muscle. It might have made muscles more efficient which can eventually slow down weight gain, or even lead to weight loss in the longer run. 

Does NMN Actually Make You Lose Pounds?

There’s some evidence that it may cause you to lose weight. However, most evidence points to indirect effects on muscles and increases in lean mass in animal models. And these indirect effects can potentially improve your metabolism, which may lead to weight loss over time.
